Trauma ( 5 and up )
Trauma occurs more than you think. Most adults have lived through at least one traumatic event and many have experienced more than one event. Trauma can also be chronic, meaning that similar events happen many times over a long period of time. More than two-thirds of children have reported at least 1 traumatic event by age 16.
Potentially traumatic events include:
ADULTS
Psychological, physical, or sexual abuse
Community or school violence
Witnessing or experiencing domestic violence
National disasters or terrorism
Commercial sexual exploitation
Sudden or violent loss of a loved one
Refugee or war experiences.
Military family-related stressors (e.g., deployment, parental loss or injury)
Physical or sexual assault
Neglect
Serious accidents or life-threatening illness.
Elementary School Children may experience:
Feeling anxious or fearful
Feeling guilt or shame
Have a hard time concentrating.
Have difficulty sleeping
Have behavioural problems
Middle and High School Children may experience:
Feeling depressed or alone
Developing eating disorders or self-harming behaviours
Begin to abuse alcohol or drugs.
Becoming involved in risky sexual behaviour
Maladaptive behaviour and anger difficulties.
Methods that I use:
TF-CBT
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based treatment for children and adolescents impacted by trauma and their parents or caregivers. Research shows that TF-CBT successfully resolves a broad array of emotional and behavioral difficulties associated with single, multiple, and complex trauma experiences. It is a short-term, structured intervention lasting from 12 to 26 sessions and has shown a 90% success rate in NC.
